Community Engagement Project

Evolution of A Neighborhood
https://tinyurl.com/4v3pc33k
For this project, I wanted to capture something that has had a large impact on my community over the last ten years and something that I have been capturing through photo as it has been changing. The Escondido Country Club closed almost ten years ago, and was left abandoned for several years. It was really unfortunate when it closed, because the country club was a beautiful institution in my neighborhood, and being just around the corner it had a lot of sentimental value for me. I photographed the abandoned property back in 2014, and then it was purchased by a man who was very disliked in the community. The main building burned down under suspicious circumstances and he began construction of a housing project, which I also photographed while it was happening in 2019. This caused a lot of uproar in the community because no one wanted the houses to be built, and it made a lot of the people who lived nearby upset. I then went this past weekend to take pictures of some of the houses that have been completed and sold, and the neighborhood looks completely different. For this project, I really wanted to highlight how much the neighborhood has changed over just under ten years, and the affect that this type of development can have on a community. This project is very close to me as I have lived through all of these development and seen the effect that they had on my community, and it was really enjoyable to add my old work to new work and develop a project where I could discuss something that was happening just around the corner.
